The little town is now a hybrid protectorate serving as a world duelists' Mecca and warrior recruitment hub for surrounding despotisms. Further on, the action shifts temporarily to glittering Venice dominated by its hedonistic Doge, and, briefly, to Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris in the France of the "Sun King."
After her boyish brother dies from his wounds in a mismatched duel, his beautiful sister, seething for revenge against a mercenary swordsman, runs away to Venice for dueling lessons. Finding its famous old swordmaster, now retired to a ballet school, will offer a "girl" only dance instruction at first, she decides to turn his trickiest lessons to her best advantage.
